8. Boeing T-X
In September 2018, the US Air Force selected the Boeing/Saab T-X as the replacement fighter jet for its aging Northrop T-38 Talon fleet. Developed jointly by Boeing Defense, Space & Security and Saab Group, the T-X is an advanced American/Swedish jet trainer and was chosen as the winner of the Advanced Pilot Training System (T-X) program.
7. Sikorsky VH-92
The United States Marine Corps’ current Marine One US Presidential transport fleet will eventually be replaced by the Sikorsky/Lockheed Martin VH-92 helicopter, which is currently under development. Sikorsky’s entry of the VH-92 for the VXX, or Presidential Helicopter Replacement Program contest, was initially rejected in favor of the Lockheed Martin VH-71 Kestrel.
6. Mitsubishi X-2 Shinshin
Formerly known as the ATD-X, the Mitsubishi X-2 Shinshin is an experimental aircraft being developed by the Japanese Ministry of Defense Technical Research and Development Institute (TRDI) for research purposes. It’s being designed for testing advanced stealth fighter aircraft technologies and most believe the X-2 Shinshin will be Japan’s first domestically-made stealth fighter.
5. Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider
The Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider is a proposed American heavy bomber as part of the US Air Force’s Long Range Strike Bomber Program (LRS-B). It’s being developed by Northrop Grumman and will be a long-range, stealth strategic bomber capable of delivering conventional and thermonuclear weapons.
4. Chengdu J-20
Developed by China’s Chengdu Aerospace Corporation, the Chengdu J-20 is a twinjet, single-seat, all-weather stealth fifth-generation fighter aircraft. Descending from the J-XX program of the early 1990s, it was designed for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) as an air superiority fighter with precision-strike capability.
3. F/A-XX Program
In 2008, the US Navy identified the need to replace its fleet of F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter aircraft. The F/A-XX development and acquisition program, known as Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD), is projected to accomplish this task starting in the late 2020’s with a sixth-generation air superiority fighter.
2. Sukhoi SU-57
Since 2002, Russia has been working to develop a stealth twin-engine multirole fifth-generation jet fighter called the Sukhoi Su-57. The single-seat jet is being designed for air superiority and attack operations as part of the PAK FA fighter program of the Russian Air Force. It will be the Russian military service’s first aircraft to use stealth technology.
1. Future Vertical Lift
The US Armed Forces plan to develop a family of military helicopters in a program called Future Vertical Lift (FVL). Using common hardware such as sensors, avionics, engines, and countermeasures, Lockheed Martin will develop five helicopters of varying sizes, or capability sets.
