An airplane landing on a highway is usually because of an emergency, a last ditch effort by a pilot to safely touch down.

But Wednesday in Michigan's Upper Peninsula it was planned out. The highway was the intended landing strip for no just one plane, but one plane after another.

It was all a part of training exercises for the Michigan National Guard.

The location was M-28 in the community of Shingleton in Alger County.

Shingleton is a relatively quiet place most days of the year, it's the kind of small community where things are predictable with not much unexpected happening.

Wednesday, M-28 was the spot for some unusual traffic, for a pretty unusual Michigan Air National Guard training mission.

M-28 is a straight stretch of flat highway in the central U.P. and it's those characteristics that caught the eye of the Michigan Air National Guard.

For six hours, cars and campers were replaced by touchdowns and takeoffs by ten Air National Guard aircraft.
