Can a drone bring down a fighter jet? Well, yes. Prior to the 2003 Iraq war, an MQ-1 predator drone was flying over southern Iraq, when it discovered a Mig-25. The drone fired missiles at the Mig, but missed it. The Mig-25 turned around and shot down the drone. But a lot of new systems are being developed right now that can do more than just shoot down other drones and aircraft. One of the most well-known of these systems is the XQ-58 Valkyrie, also known as the loyal wingman. With these systems, fighters like the F-35 Lightning 2 and the F-22 Raptor, as well as the SAAB Gripen, are compatible, and you would have one manned unit in control of two or three drones. Back in November 2017, the MQ-9 made its first air-to-air kill by shooting down another drone using an Aim-9X, but, in a test. From there, it will be easy to bring down a fighter jet in the same manner. Reapers have Link 16 data links, which allows them to launch a missile without having a target, while a different platform, like an F-35, can take over control of the missile mid-flight, and guide it to the intended target.
