China’s Aircraft Carrier Is Ready To Beat The US
One of the key similarities between the new Chinese carrier concept and the $13 billion Ford-class Supercarriers and future-French aircraft carriers is the use of a catapult-assisted takeoff but arrested recovery configuration, also known as the CATOBAR configuration.
With this configuration, aircraft carriers can launch slower and heavier aircraft than previously possible because the launch section, known as EMALS, packs 29% more energy than its predecessor. By extension, aircraft to be launched with the CATOBAR configuration will be loaded with more fuel, irrespective of additional weight. As a result, aircraft launched would have a farther operational range than if they were launched with the short takeoff but arrested recovery configuration, also known as the STOBAR configuration.
