Recently, the latest photos of China's Type 003 aircraft carrier Fujian came to light. The Chinese navy's latest giant warship is one step closer to being delivered. The temporary fitting for the construction of the island and equipment attached to the island has been removed. In the photos, all the construction scaffolding around the island has been cleared. Cranes around the island has also been moved elsewhere.
The carrier has been fitted with Type 346B phased array radar antennas. The ship's island is also painted the same silver and white color as the hull, common in Chinese naval vessels. This remaining fitting out will probably be a few months away, with the first sea trial scheduled for the second half of 2023.
The Fujian is China's first aircraft carrier to use electromagnetic catapults. With a displacement of more than 80,000 tons, it is currently the largest aircraft carrier besides the U.S. supercarrier currently in service, and has surpassed the Liaoning.
The two Chinese aircraft carriers already in service are the Liaoning and the Shandong. It will take at least a year and a half for the Fujian to undergo sea tests. This is mainly because the Fujian is China's first flatdeck aircraft carrier and the first to use catapults, so the sea trials may be longer. That means it could be delivered to the navy by 2025.
The Fujian is likely to carry 80 carrier-based aircraft and may be equipped with J-35 stealth fighters. But the J-35 is unlikely to enter service in 2035.
The Fujian aircraft carrier will completely solve the problem of using large carrier-borne aircraft, and use electromagnetic catapults to propel larger aircraft such as early warning aircraft to take off, which will help enhance the Chinese navy's battlefield situational awareness. The Chinese carrier battle group's own detection range will be extended to more than 600 kilometers, which can improve the ability to defend against long-range missiles of the US military.
The Fujian is also seen as crucial for the Chinese navy, and even the Air Force, to improve its far-sea air defense, anti-submarine and anti-missile combat capabilities, which will further improve the joint combat capability of the Chinese military.
