China says the U.S. shooting down the balloon has seriously impacted and damaged relations. They have also threatened to retaliate. We now know that the Balloon was 200 feet tall and weighed a couple tons. It also carried explosives on it, likely to destroy the balloon should it get caught. This has been absolutely humiliating for China. The US Secretary of State canceled his meeting with Xi in a major snub. One of China’s goals this year was to calm and improve the US-China relationship in order to boost their global image and economy. And instead they started the year off by violating the sovereignty of the US. getting a bilateral meeting canceled, and potentially picking up new sanctions. The US says that it doesn’t want conflict and views its relationship with China as one of its most important. But as one defense official told us “In terms of —- ups, this is a pretty big one”
