China is extremely worried about Japan and South Korea joining a joint security alliance with the US. China’s pivot from being predictably insane to unpredictably insane in just two years seems to have pushed the two countries over the edge. South Korea and Japan have long had a mutual friend named America but they personally weren’t friends - in fact they didn’t really like each other. But China’s rhetoric and actions have made it clear that the train has left the station, and this has forced both nations towards pursuing a three way defense partnership with the US. This comes as Japan is opening a NATO office at the end of this year and as the Philippines, Australia, and Japan are increasing their defensive ties to each other. NATO may end up expanding to the Pacific or a new defensive alliance may be formed, but one thing is clear - The circumstances that made European foes drop their differences and create NATO are now the same circumstances that are making such an alliance possible in Asia.
