In a recent incident over the South China Sea, tensions arose as a Chinese fighter jet executed an excessively aggressive maneuver in close proximity to a US military plane. Last week, a Chinese J-16 aircraft forced a US RC-135 plane to navigate through its turbulent wake, causing concern and raising international alarm.

The US military command in the Indo-Pacific region responded by reaffirming its dedication to safe and responsible operations within the boundaries of international law. A video capturing the incident depicted the Chinese fighter jet crossing the path of the US plane, resulting in turbulence that rattled the cockpit of the RC-135.

The Chinese embassy in Washington, represented by spokesperson Liu Pengyu, sidestepped addressing the incident directly and instead criticized the United States for its frequent deployment of aircraft and vessels for close-in reconnaissance on China.

Liu emphasized that China remains committed to taking the necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and security. Additionally, China expressed its intention to collaborate with regional nations in order to promote peace and stability in the South China Sea.

Prior to the incident, China declined a request from US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin for a meeting during the Shangri-La Dialogue Asian Security Summit. This rejection is part of a pattern, as China has reportedly ignored or turned down more than a dozen dialogue requests since 2021.
