The F-22 Raptor aptor's top speed of Mach 2.2 is not enough to outrun a Mach 5 capable hypersonic missile, and China is now working to transfer this technology into some platform that can target the F-22. A Chinese expert asserted in December 2021 that if an F-22 Raptor fired a missile or dropped a bomb from a short distance, ground-to-air hypersonic missiles might close in and destroy it in a matter of seconds. Such missiles could zero in on "practically any target with extraordinary accuracy and speed" because they have "heat-seeking" capabilities. Chinese experts said that targets may be stealth aircraft, warships, or even moving cars on the street. The key to the Chinese claim is that a hypersonic weapon would still need to be fired from a "small distance," and when the aircraft is relatively low to the ground, this means a high-flying F-22 at range would still have time to maneuver. Although a hypersonic heat-seeking missile possess a threat, it is probably not as great as the Chinese researchers claim. The F-22 uses cutting-edge stealth technology to almost disappear from enemy radars, and an enemy won't launch a missile, if it doesn't know the aircraft is there.
