Chinese Military preparation: Act of deterrence

The visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi was full of high action military drama. She is the third-highest ranking US official, to visit Taiwan in more than 25 years. China has left no stone unturned in the projection of its power to somehow let this visit not happen. However, it did happen which left the dragon fuming. As a result of which, we have seen multiple military exercises- 11 ballistic missile & rocket were launched around Taiwan. Both the aircraft carriers of the PLA Navy have moved out from their homeports along with Type 075 amphibious assault ship.

Hours before the Pelosi arrival in Taiwan, it was reported that several Chinese warplanes were seen flying close to the median line dividing the Taiwan Strait. It was also reported that two Chinese mainland guided-missile frigates and a survey ship sailed from north to south through Yonaguni Island waters, heading east of Taiwan island. So, China had made all its preparation and brought forward military assets to ensure the Pelosi visit does not happen. This is typical modus operandi of Chinese military. They will not come into direct conflict but will surround the opponent with huge build up.

US Response

However, it was US against which China was standing – the biggest bully itself. Besides all the bells and whistles of Chinese military, In response to Chinese military threat, Four US warships, including an aircraft carrier, were positioned in waters east of the island. Aircraft carrier the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) and big deck amphibious ship USS Tripoli (LHA-7), with Marine F-35B Lighting II Joint Strike Fighters embarked, were operating in the vicinity of Taiwan, on the edge of the South China Sea.

Electronic Warfare between US & China

However, what many of us are not aware of is the electronic warfare between US and China that happened before the Pelosi’s aircraft touchdown Taiwan. The news was reported by South China Morning post. According to the state broadcaster CCTV, the US Air Force transport plane that was carrying Pelosi and her delegation from Kuala Lumpur to Taipei on August 2 was under "full tracking and surveillance" by the Chinese military. The tracking was aimed at “deterrence”. According to PLA Major General Meng Jiangqing of the PLA National Defense University, the tracking was done for "preventive". However, the tracking efforts were unsuccessful. PLA was using its Type 055 destroyer and J-16D – a dedicated electronic warfare aircraft for tracking the Nancy Pelosi’s aircraft.

How US defeated China in its own backyard?

The Pelosi's plane took an unusually curved route during the flight, flying southeast toward the Indonesian part of Borneo before turning north to pass over the eastern Philippines. The US Aircraft Strike Group sent by the Pentagon for escort, jammed nearly all of the PLA's electronic warfare equipment and rendered them useless. The Type 055 destroyer has a radar with a range of 500km, still it did not notice the Pelosi’s aircraft.
