In the opening days of World War 2, two Royal Navy submarines, HMS Oxley and HMS Triton found themselves caught up in a friendly fire incident that would tragically claim the lives of 53 sailors.

On the 10th September 1939, Royal Navy submarines HMS Oxley and HMS Triton were patrolling off the Norwegian coast line when they sighted each other. After much confusion HMS Triton fired two torpedos at HMS Oxley. One of these struck the submarine causing critical and fatal damage.

The friendly fire incident was investigated by the Royal Navy revealing significant operational and command failings.

The event was the second fatal friendly fire incident that the British had suffered in the first week of World War 2.

The story of the submarines HMS Oxley and HMS Triton is a fascinating tale, highlighting the difficulties and nervousness that surrounded not just the Royal Navy, but all forces in the opening days of World War 2.
