The Soviet Union was replaced by 15 independent countries following its collapse in 1991, and one of them was Republic of Moldova. Moldova at time had 34 MiG-29 Fulcrums, eight Mi-8 Hip helicopters and a handful of transport aircraft in its inventory. But Moldova was in a recession at the same time, and was not able to maintain the fleet. America was afraid that Moldova would sell its Mig-29s to Iran, and 14 of them were Mig-29s of C variant, nuclear capable. In 1997, America bought 21 of the MiG-29s, including 14 C models, 500 air to air missiles and all the spare parts and diagnostic equipment present at the Moldovan air base where the aircraft were stationed. The Soviet Union was not in a position to stop the purchase. The U.S. crew dismantled the fighter jets, and transported them to to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. Moldova received $40 million in humanitarian assistance, some army trucks and other non-lethal equipment In exchange.
