Illegal gold mining in French Guiana is causing widespread environmental damage and health risks as hundreds of tons of toxic mercury are released into the ground and waterways each year. This activity has also led to rapid deforestation. To combat the issue, the French army has destroyed over 30,000 camps and deployed more than a thousand soldiers and gendarmes to crack down on the illegal practices of clandestine gold panners. However, this mission has already resulted in several fatalities.
