The UK's last military flight to leave the Wadi Seidna Air Base in Sudan has departed. The RAF military were the last to leave the airbase after ensuring that British nationals had been safely evacuated to Cyprus.

The operation involved more than 1,200 personnel from 16 Air Assault Brigade, the Royal Marines and the Royal Air Force.

The UK government has said that it will no longer be running evacuation flights from Wadi Saeedna airfield because of a significant decline in the number of British nationals coming forward and an “increasingly volatile situation on the ground”.

A team of British diplomats based in Port Sudan will provide consular assistance to British nationals leaving by commercial routes, while HMS Lancaster, the Royal Navy frigate, will support evacuation efforts from Sudan.
