Nordic air chiefs on March 16th 2023 signed their first Nordic Air Commanders' Intent, laying down the foundation for a unified Nordic air defence, operating together as one force, with integrated command and control.
The Four Nordic Countries air forces of Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway will progess the development of what will be a Nordic Air Force operating seemlessly across Nato's northern flank bordering the Russian Border.
Finland became NATO's newest member on 4th April 2023 adding a further 800 miles of NATO/ Russian federation Border. This new Nordic Air Force will in the next few years operate one of the largest fleets of F-35A Lightning II in the world, integrated with the very latest Swedish Gripen aircraft.
The Russian Tu-95MS Strategic Missile Carriers and TU-22M3 Long Range Bombers and their fighter escorts are regular visitors to the Nordic Region, flying legally through corridors of international air space, they have for many years flown very close to each of the four Nordic countries airspace and on occasion entering the airspace, violating international law. The Russian aircraft are intercepted by a network of NATO Member and Alliance aircraft and escorted back to international Airspace. These violations often result in the Summoning of Russia's Ambassadors to explain the completely unacceptable actions of the Russian Air Force.
The future Nordic Air force will have incresed defensive and interopability capabiliies to further protect the Nordic Region.
Video explores current aircraft inventory, future aircraft and development options.
