Norway Buys Stealthy Cruise Missiles and Air-to-Air Missiles from the U.S. for its F-35s

Hello everyone and welcome to my channel where I talk about the latest news and developments in the defense industry. In this video, I’m going to discuss a recent deal between the United States and Norway that involves a massive sale of missiles for the F-35 fighter jets.
According to a press release from the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the U.S. State Department has approved a possible foreign military sale to Norway of 36 AGM-158B JASSM-ER (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range) cruise missiles, 100 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile) missiles, and related equipment and services. The total estimated cost of this deal is $1.166 billion.
But what are these missiles and why does Norway need them? Let’s take a closer look.
The AGM-158B JASSM-ER is a stealthy, long-range, air-launched cruise missile developed by Lockheed Martin for the U.S. Air Force and international partners. It is a larger and more capable version of the AGM-158A JASSM, which has a range of 370 km. The JASSM-ER can fly more than 1,000 km, thanks to a more efficient turbofan engine and a larger fuel tank. It carries a 450 kg penetrator warhead that can destroy hardened targets such as bunkers, bridges, or ships. It also has a GPS-inertial navigation system and an infrared seeker for terminal guidance.
The JASSM-ER is designed to be launched from outside the range of enemy air defenses, allowing the F-35 to strike targets without exposing itself to detection or interception. It is compatible with several U.S. and allied aircraft, such as the B-1 Lancer, B-2 Spirit, B-52 Stratofortress, F-15E Strike Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and F/A-18 Hornet. Norway is the first European country to acquire the JASSM-ER for its F-35 fleet.
The AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM is an upgraded version of the AIM-120C AMRAAM, which is one of the most widely used air-to-air missiles in the world. It has a range of over 100 km and can engage multiple targets simultaneously. It uses an active radar seeker that can lock on to targets before or after launch, as well as an inertial navigation system with GPS updates. It also has improved resistance to electronic jamming and countermeasures.
The AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM is intended to enhance the air superiority and self-defense capabilities of the F-35 against enemy fighters and drones. It can be carried internally or externally by the F-35, depending on the stealth requirements of the mission. Norway already operates the AIM-120C AMRAAM on its F-16s, so the transition to the newer version should be smooth.
The U.S.-Norway missile deal is expected to improve Norway’s national security and regional stability, as well as strengthen its interoperability with the U.S. and other NATO allies. Norway is one of the founding members of NATO and a key partner in the F-35 program. It plans to acquire 52 F-35As to replace its aging F-16s by 2025.
