On Freedom's Wings: a tribute to veterans. Three veterans experience a week of reflection and appreciation during Warbirds of America Salute to Veterans. Jack Sinise (Gary Sinise's Uncle) was a Lead Navigator in a Boeing B-17 Bomber and flew 30 missions over Europe in World War II. Years ago, through friends at the Disabled American Veterans organization, Gary was able to arrange a flight for Uncle Jack on a B 17. We made a nice short film call "Uncle Jack, A Chicago Tale" that documented the trip. Gary will always cherish these moments, spent with his Uncle Jack and Father who got a ride on the B-17 as well. Don Casey, also a Navigator in a B-17 was not so fortunate. He was shot down and was a member of the "Great Escape." 50 US officers were shot, 3 out of the 76 escapees made it. Not long after a devastating bomb attack on Jan. 11, 1969, U.S. Army Sgt. James Sursely laid in his hospital bed trying to think of football players who were missing two legs and an arm. None came to mind. Still, he has no regrets about volunteering to serve in Vietnam. True American Heroes.
