Philippine authorities have now confirmed that 50 people have died after a military plane crashed on the island of Jolo on Sunday.
The transport aircraft, called the Lockheed C-130 Hercules, was carrying nearly 100 combat troops when it overshot the runway while landing at Jolo airport in the Sulu province.
Horrified soldiers and local residents watched as the plane then slammed into a coconut grove and burst into flames. Some troops onboard jumped off the aircraft before it exploded.
Emergency service personnel and armoured vehicles could be seen at the crash site on Monday. All passengers have now been accounted for and 49 troops rescued.
Investigators are looking for the aircraft's black boxes, which contain the cockpit voice and flight data recordings. The cause of the crash is still unknown.
