Poland's Minister of Defense Mariusz Blastsak announced that the decision to buy Turkish combat UAVs. This decision is making Poland the first NATO member country to purchase this equipment from Turkey.
Before announcing the getting Turkish combat UAV's, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak had made a relatively "enigmatic" post on Twitter on May 19. In that post, Błaszczak shared a Bayraktar TB2 UAV model carrying a Polish flag, sparking rumours of the purchase of Turkish drones.
According to Polish media, Poland will buy 24 Bayraktar TB2 combat unmanned aerial vehicles. The first "batch" will be delivered to the Polish Armed Forces in 2022.
The Bayraktar TB2 UAVs, which are planning to buy the Polish Ministry of Defense, are unmanned aerial vehicles proven in conflicts in Syria, Libya and in the battles for Nagorno-Karabakh. Previously, the Ministry of Defense management did not signal any willingness to buy specific UAV models. It was only said that market research was underway as part of the program code-named "Gryf". At the end of last year, the Armament Inspectorate only informed that the analytical phase was coming to an end. It was getting closer to announcing a tender.
Poland will sign the contract to purchase Turkish UAVs Tuesday during President Andrzej Duda's official visit to Turkey.
