On September 8 1943, Alberto Li Gobbi and Giorgio Farotti, officers of the Regio Esercito, made the opposite decision. The first joined the Allies and the latter remained loyal to the Germans.
After the war they both became Generals of the new Italian Army and with opposite views on how the armistice affected the role of Italy in NATO.
