In the early hours of 6th February, Turkey and Syria were hit by a powerful earthquake that destroyed whole towns and villages, with the death toll currently exceeding 55,000 and an estimated 1.5 million people made homeless.

16 Medical Regiment, supported by the RAF’s Tactical Medical Wing, was mobilised and flew out to Turkey to support affected communities and bringing surgical capabilities, ward beds, primary health care and mental health treatment. Within a week of the earthquake, troops were working at a medical facility in Turkoglu alongside Turkish and British civilian medics and, across the military medics’ two-week deployment, the combined facility treated more than 6,300 people.
