The RAF’s trials in sustainable fuels are continuing, with leftover fuel from last year’s 100% Sustainably Fuelled Voyager test mixed in a 50/50 blend with regular Jet A1 to be used in an air-to-air refuelling of a Typhoon and a C130 Hercules.

The trial went without any problems and demonstrated that all three platforms are able to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) or a SAF blend without experiencing any loss in performance.

SAF – which is made from waste-based sustainable feedstocks, such as used cooking oil – reduces lifecycle carbon emissions on average by up to 80% compared to the conventional jet fuel it replaces, lessens the RAF’s reliance on global supply chains and fossil fuels, and improves operational resilience - an important step towards the RAF’s ambitions of reaching Carbon Neutrality by 2040.
