Russia unleashed one of the largest missile strike on Ukraine on March 9th 2023. Eight kamikaze drones and 81 missiles were launched during the strike, said the Ukrainian Air Force. Kh-101, Kh-555 and Kalibr cruise missiles were fired by Tu-95 and Tu-22 M3 bombers from Russian soil. Six Kh-47 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles were also launched by MiG-31 heavy interceptors. Other types of air-launched guided missiles, including the S-300 air defense missiles that Russia routinely employs to hit ground targets, were also deployed in the attack. Only 34 missiles and four drones were intercepted, which is a record-low number of interceptions in comparison to earlier strikes. Kinzhal missiles hit a Kyiv infrastructure complex. While the extent and kind of the damage is yet undisclosed, the mayor of Kiev confirmed that two individuals were hurt in the incident. Though K.H 47 M2 Kinzhal has a range of just 1500 miles, similar to the US Tomahawk cruise missile, but it travels at Mach 10, and can be launched from the Mig-31, as it was during these raids.
