This is the amazing story of how a World War Two RAF Bomber crew of number 42 Squadron were rescued from the middle of The North Sea after ditching their Bristol Beaufort Torpedo Bomber in 1942.

Saved by Winkie the homing Pigeon. RAF Coastal Command regularly flew homing pigeons on their aircraft for use in emergencies and in 1942, Winkie the pigeon was put to perfect use to alert the authorities of RAF Leuchars of the ditched Bristol Beaufort.

Winkie the pigeon had become the unexpected hero of the story.

The Bristol Beaufort was a British twin-engine torpedo bomber. It was designed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company as a successor to the earlier Blenheim bomber and was intended to serve as a torpedo bomber for the RAF's Coastal Command.
