The men were well armed and took the 232 passengers and crew hostage-- leading to a hellish 54 hour siege. The National Gendarmerie Intervention Group, commonly known as GIGN, is a highly specialized police tactical unit operating under the National Gendarmerie of France. Its diverse range of missions include countering terrorism, hostage rescue, counter-intelligence, safeguarding government officials, critical sites (such as French embassies in conflict zones), and combating organized crime.

The National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN) operates under the direct authority of the Director General of the Gendarmerie Nationale (DGGN), who serves as the chief of staff of the Gendarmerie and reports directly to the Ministry of the Interior. In case of a major crisis, the DGGN or his Deputy for Operations may assume command; however, GIGN mostly supports the day-to-day operations of local units of the Departmental Gendarmerie. Additionally, GIGN is part of the European ATLAS Network, which is an informal association comprising the specialized police units of the 27 member states of the European Union.
