In April last year, F-35 Lightning II was able to surpass more than 500,000 hours of operations across global missions. This was a big milestone for the fifth generation aircraft, which indicates that the program has indeed matured. F-35 lightning II is a multirole fighter which is operational at almost 25 bases and 9 ships around the world. The multirole capability of this new jet is dialed up a notch, which makes it a unique asset for the US, its allies across the world and partner nations.
One of the big reasons which makes F-35 II such a powerful fighter is that it is a joint strike fighter and combines the functionality of three jets into one. It was produced in a way which made it completely unique - since it was designed to combine air-to-air, strike and ground operations into one aircraft. This was a tall order and one which took a lot of money and resources to accomplish. Just for a perspective, this new fifth generation fighter was designed to replace the USAF’s A-10 and F-16, the US Navy’s F/A-18 as well as USMC F/A-18 and AV-8B Harrier. The F-35 II is a single-engine, single-seat plane which has the unique capability of operating as a conventional-takeoff - and landing as well as launching off from an aircraft carrier ability. The former CTOL variant has been called F-35 A, and specifically linked to the Air Force whereas the CV variant was designed for the US Navy and has been called the F-35 C. The USMC along with UK’s Royal Air Force and Royal Navy use the F-35 B which utilizes the STOVL protocol, which makes it a spiritual descendant of Harrier jets. Due to the multiple landing and taking off mechanisms, the F-35 has become the mainstay of most allied airpower including the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Japan, Israel, the Netherlands, Norway and South Korea. Other countries such as Germany and Poland are also taking a keen interest in the plane and will likely become future customers.
