The first time this happened, an F-35 stealth fighter jet intercepted a Russian military aircraft. This was done by an F-35A Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) when it intercepted two long-range anti-submarine maritime patrol aircraft Tu-142 escorted by MiG-31.

The intercept was carried out in international airspace south of the Greenland – Iceland – England (GIUK) gap.
