Video of a V-22 Osprey shows the crash landing of the aircraft which as an accident history that has generated controversy over its perceived safety.
On 5 August 2017, a U.S. Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron after taking off from the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard struck the USS Green Bay and then crashed in Shoalwater Bay on the east coast of Australia. 23 personnel were rescued, with three confirmed dead.
The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is an American multi-mission, tiltrotor military aircraft with both vertical takeoff and landing and short takeoff and landing capabilities. The aircraft is designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft.
During testing from 1991 to 2006, there were four crashes resulting in 30 fatalities. Since becoming operational in 2007, the V-22 has had eight crashes, including two combat-zone crashes, and several other accidents and incidents that resulted in a total of 16 fatalities. In 2022 alone, there were two crashes of the V-22 Osprey which claimed 9 lives.
