Varuna : India’s 1st Personal Aerial Vehicle
In July 2022, Indian Navy had conducted its maiden seminar of the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) called Swavlamban. The major highlight of the session was the demo of ‘Varuna’ Personal Air vehicle – an autonomous multi-copter drone capable of carrying a passenger.
Varuna was also part of the Indian Navy’s Tableau during republic day 2023. In the rear section of the Naval Tableau three models of autonomous unmanned systems which were developed indigenously under IDEX-Sprint Challenge were displayed and Varuna was also one of them.
Varuna is India’s maiden human-carrying all electric autonomous platform built and manufactured indigenously by Sagar Defence Engineering. Capt. Nikunj Parashar, founder of Sagar Defence Engineering along with his two co-founders with significant support from Indian Navy.
Varuna Specifications
The vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), electric propulsion, and automated air traffic management enables the drone to use it from doorstep to any desired destination. This passenger drone carries numerous benefits including casualty evacuation in case of road accidents, use as an air ambulance in remote villages, use as an air taxi in metro cities, emergency evacuations, disaster relief and medical emergencies, etc.
This passenger drone, remotely controlled or flown automatically along predetermined routes, can hold a range of payloads in the area between its landing gear. It has the capability to carry payloads up to 130 kg, and can cover 25 km in just 30 minutes.
Varuna orders
As per recent reports from India Today:
An Indian firm is negotiating a deal to supply made-in-India drones to the Australian Navy for $5 Million. The firm is negotiating the project with the Royal Australian Navy through their local partner to sell them the made-in-India Varuna drones.
The Indian Navy also placed orders for these drones, planned to be deployed on large-size warships, including the new aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, to carry personnel and cargo. Varuna eliminates not just the dangers associated with low visibility & accurate landings but also deck preparation in such operations.
