In World War 2, Germany sought to defeat its opponents in a series of short campaigns. They quickly overran much of Europe and were victorious during the first phase of the war. Germany defeated and occupied Poland in 1939, and in 1940: Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and France. After the successful invasion of France, it was only a matter of time before the Germans turned their sights across the English Channel. Since June, English vessels in the Channel had been attacked and aerial battles had been fought over Britain. Germany attempted to wear down the Royal Air Force before sending a land invasion. German land invasion of the United Kingdom, code-named Operation Sea Lion was planned on September 17th, 1940. But with Germany failing to cripple Britain’s air power, especially in the Battle of Britain, Hitler changed strategies. A land invasion was now ruled out as unrealistic. But what would happen to the Royal Family ( King George VI and his family, including a 14-year-old Princess Elizabeth a future Queen Elizabeth II ) if the German land operation would succeed?
