In the 1960s and 70s, five U-2 aircraft were shot down by China, but guess what? None of the U-2s were flown by US pilots; they were flown by Taiwanese pilots. The US wanted to keep an eye on China's nuclear program, but in May 1960, the USSR shot down a CIA U-2, and this changed a lot of things. America turned to Taiwan, and the Republic of China was fully ready to fly its pilots over mainland China and set up a weather reconnaissance squadron, but its other name was "black cats." American U-2s, with Taiwanese insignia, flew some 220 missions and covered "more than 10 million square kilometers over 30 Chinese provinces." The first U-2 was shot down by the P.L.A. on September 9, 1962, over Nanchang, China, and then, in July 1964, another U-2 was shot down by an SA-2 over Chenghai. In September 1967, another SAM shot down another U-2 over Jiaxin, China. Two more U-2s were shot down in 1969 and 1970. 3 pilots died and 2 got captured, however, released soon in 1982.
