On December 20, 1989, during Operation Just Cause in Panama, the F-117 was used in combat for the first time, but Panama's air defenses could not stand a chance against the new stealth aircraft. Operation Desert Storm marked the first actual combat for the F-117 Nighthawk. Iraq had much better air defenses than Panama. The US wanted a stealthy aircraft that could destroy the command posts before the Iraqis realized what had hit them. 14 F-117s launched on the opening night of the conflict. Although all of the jets surprisingly made it to their destination, the pilots were unsure if stealth would be effective or not. The lead pilot, Major General Gregory Feast, the same pilot who dropped the first bombs in Panama, prepared his GBU-27s, but in order for them to hit the target precisely, Feast had to drop them below 10,000 feet, within the range of Iraqi Sams. Nevertheless, having faith in stealth, Feast opened the weapons bay and dropped, and the bombs hit exactly pinpoint. All aircraft arrived safely at the base 90 minutes later. The F-117 made 1600 direct hits over the course of war.
