On November 24th, 2015, two unidentified aircraft were seen taking off from Syria by the Turkish Air Force's early warning radars. The aircraft were Russian Su-24 Fencers, performing a mission close to the Turkish border. One Su-24 aircraft ignored 10 radio warnings from the Turkish Air Force and proceeded in the direction of Turkish airspace after failing to respond. A pair of patrolling F-16s were given permission to open fire on the intruder as it entered Turkish airspace. From beyond visual range, the leading F-16 downed the Russian Su-24 by launching an Aim-120C missile at it. Early Russian news sources said that two Su-24s were headed for Syrian Turkmen targets and that the aircraft had been shot down by Syrian rebels using ground firepower, but they later confirmed the Turkish claim that the aircraft had been downed by Turkish F-16s. The Russian aircraft was shot down and crashed close to Turkmen Mountain, according to a flight path diagram released by the Turkish military. The aircraft had previously crossed the southernmost point of Hatay Province. This event resulted in the death of one Russian pilot, but the other one survived.
