The Lockheed's U-2, also known as dragon lady, was America's first step towards the stealth technology, but one incident soon thought America the difference between a plane that is stealthy, and one that fly high. It was May 1st 1960, Francis Garry Powers, an Air force and CIA pilot, took off from Badaber air base in Peshawar Pakistan to Bodø Norway. During his mission, Powers was supposed to photograph the Soviet ICBM sites, surface to air missile sites, an air base, and other key military installations including a plutonium enrichment site. Soon after entering the Soviet Union, Powers was detected by the Soviet radars. A Mig-19 and an Su-9 even chased the U-2, but they failed because of U-2's extream altitude. Fighters failed, but surface to air missiles didn't! 3 SA-2s were launched, and one successfully hit the U-2 near Kusolino village. Powers parachuted out and was supposed to commit suicide, but he decided not to, and captured by the Soviets. America attempted to cover up by saying it was a NASA's U-2, called ER-1, that lost its route and accidentally ended up in Soviet Union. But USSR released the wreckage of plane, Francis Garry Powers and photos of military sites take Powers photographed. Powers was supposed to spend the next 10 years in prison, but U.S exchanged him for a Soviet spy Rudolf Abel.
