If you take a look at the color of all aircrafts, you will notice that most civilian aircrafts are painted in bright colors, while most Military Airplanes are painted grey. As most of us will already know, the color is mainly for camouflage purposes. Here is the question. Why do people use grey instead of the color of the blue sky as the camouflage color? The only reason to do that is because grey color can provide near perfect camouflage in sky when seen with human eye. Based on the research, it is easier for a grey aircraft to blend against the terrain, the hazy sky and the blue ocean. In comparison, a bright blue fighter jet will be easier to be identified in a short time. Although radar and optical sensors can still pick the aircraft even they are painted in grey. However, when jet fighters are doing a dogfight at a close range, pilots have missed camouflaged planes while fighting on the horizon. The same reason is also applied to civilian aircraft. Painting a bright color on them can make them be easier to be identified, and thus lower the risk of collisions.
