Traveling at Mach 5, bypassing missile defense shields, and avoiding radar detection, hypersonic missiles are being touted as the new and dangerous weapons system of the future.
With a low flight arc, some hypersonic missiles can fly under radar detection systems and avoid the critical first point of radar contact, which occurs when missiles pass the upper atmosphere before diving down back to earth and towards their target, giving defense systems time to track and intercept. Some hypersonic missiles fly under this ark, while others rely on their blinding fast speed to outrun counter fire.
They achieve this speed with scramjet technology which eliminates the moving parts in the engine. This is done by using the forward speed of the aircraft to compress incoming air for combustion.
After several projects such as the Falcon program, HTV-2, and Arclight program failed, the US Army has developed the c-HGB or Common Hypersonic Glide Body. The c-HGB is sent into the upper atmosphere by a rocket before separating and diving down on its target at hypersonic speeds. It’s so fast you won’t even see it coming.
