In December 2022, new US nuclear weapons arrived in NATO bases – the B61-12 bomb. What exactly is it? The B61-12 is a gravity-delivered weapon that boasts a guided tail kit that can steer it to its target with much greater accuracy. This latest version of the venerable B61 system, introduced in 1962, packs a low-yield that is ideal for bunker busting missions while doing minimal damage to the surrounding area.
Russia strongly protested the deployment of this weapon to Europe, as it undermines that country’s own nuclear effectiveness. In contrast to the upgraded B61, Russia’s arsenal of tactical nuclear weapons is older and less capable. With Putin’s options in Ukraine narrowing and his isolation at home and abroad increasing, the B61-12 is yet another weight added onto his burden, and, in an extreme scenario, is ideal for a decapitation strike. Although unlikely, that capability is certainly something that the increasingly paranoid Putin is thinking about.
