The largest Chinese military aircraft, the Y-20 transport plane, has landed in Austria to participate in the Airpower 2022 airshow. This is the first time in almost two decades that Chinese Air Force aircraft have appeared in an airshow in the west, marking another breakthrough for the Chinese military. The pilot of this Y-20 is believed to be a female major general, Wenli Liu, deputy chief of the Air Force of the Southern Theater Command.
After the landing, General Liu and the crew exited the Y-20 and met with the Austrian officials to greet the Chinese delegation.
However, it appears the Y-20 suffered a heavy landing. The aircraft clearly bounced back into the air after it touched the runway. And then it dropped down again and landed successfully. It is widely believed that this landing is far from ideal. There has been no report of any structural issues with the Y-20. The aircraft will continue its static display at the airshow as planned. It is common that an aircraft’s overall lifespan is reduced after a heavy landing, but it might not be a significant factor in how long the aircraft can stay in service.
Here I am going to play the clip again to show you the heavy landing.
And now I will play a video of a Y-20 swiftly landing at a recent air show in China. It is very obvious this landing is smooth and much safer for the aircraft and the crew.
This is the first time a Chinese military transport aircraft has been presented at an air show in Europe. Previously, Chinese fighter jets, such as the J-8 Two fighter, participated in the Paris air show in the 1990s. This type of event has become extremely rare since China's relationship with the West deteriorated.
It is reported the Y-20 did not broadcast its flight status to tracking websites, like the Flight Radar 24 website, so it showed up as an aircraft with "No Callsign."
The Y-20 is a high-wing monoplane with a T-tail. The four-turbofan engine layout ensures it can carry heavy equipment, such as a main battle tank. The engine choice is four Russian D-30KP-2 turbofan engines, all mounted under the main wings. The heavy long-haul transport aircraft can perform in almost all weather conditions for military operations, disaster relief, and humanitarian aid. The first flight of the machine took place in 2013, and three years later, the transporter was officially put into service.
Earlier this year, the Y-20 completed a breakthrough mission, delivering multiple FD2000 anti-aircraft missile systems to Serbia. This marks the first time the Chinese Air Force directly sends weapons to a European country. And the Y-20 fleet has been delivering humanitarian aid to over 10 countries across the world, including South Pacific island countries. All these are indications that the Chinese military is now capable of projecting its capabilities to faraway regions of the world.
