The C-5 Galaxy is among the largest military aircraft in the world. It provides the United States Air Force (USAF) with a heavy intercontinental strategic airlift capability, and has been operated by the USAF since 1969. The fuel load weighs 332,500 pounds, allowing the C-5 with a load of 204,904 pounds to fly 2,150 nautical miles, offload, and fly to a second base 500 nautical miles away from the original destination - all without aerial refueling. The C-5 has been used to support U.S. military operations in all major conflicts including Vietnam, Iraq, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan.
