(30 Mar 2015) Iraqi forces led an assault on the Tikrit General Hospital on Monday, where they believe Islamic State militants who control the city, are sheltering.
An explosion and plumes of smoke were seen around the hospital in the city's south east.
Lieutenant General Riyadh Jalal, the commander of Iraqi land forces said his troops are determined to drive IS militants from the city and beyond.
Islamic State group flags still fly over parts of Tikrit and the battle continues for Iraqi troops who are fighting without the country's Iran-backed Shiite militias, who had been instrumental to the operation so far.
They backed out in protest over the US involvement in the fight for Tikrit.
Last Wednesday, the US began airstrikes in Tikrit in support of what it called a "stalled" Iraqi ground offensive to retake the city, after it insisted that Iranian-backed militia pulled back.
The battle for Tikrit is seen as a key step towards eventually driving the Islamic State group from Iraq's second largest city Mosul, which is further north.
