Well, this didn't go as planned. This was my first trip out into the forest for several months, and I actually decided to go specifically because there was torrential rain. The aim was to show how to construct a small fire and a rain shelter, and to make a cup of tea (using the old Czechoslovak military poncho and kettle-pot featured in the Vintage Bushcraft Equipment video). I also wanted to show how to make a fire using just a fire striker and natural products in the area (for example birch bark and tinder). I did accomplish all this but because everything was so sodden it took a long time to get the fire going. Also, because of the downpour I chose to use my Apeman adventure camera and a body mic. There is quite a bit of rustling in the audio, which I do apologize for, but I decided to use the video anyway because it reinforces the fact that not every trip into the woods is as idyllic as often portrayed. Bushcraft and wilderness adventure are amazing experiences but you have to learn to face the rough as well as the smooth. The air temperature was just above freezing - any lower and it would have been snowing, which I really wish it had done. Strangely, though, when you face all the challenges that nature - and technolgy - throws at you, and you sit there drinking hot tea under your tarp in the pouring rain with a stream roaring nearby and the tree canopy overhead, you feel a great sense of accomplishment and Zen.
