As Roman Ingarden expressed the matter, each multi-cellular organism is a relatively isolated system of a very high order, containing many likewise relatively isolated systems at lower levels. The latter are both partially interconnected and also partially segregated. This allows them to exercise their specific functions in the service of the organism as a whole in a way which leaves them relatively undisturbed. We will explore Ingarden’s ideas on relatively isolated systems by considering their application to (1) physical systems (such as the solar system), (2) the human cognitive system, and (3) social systems (such as the New York Stock Exchange and the Milan Subway System).
