(1 Feb 1980) STORY
Afghanistan remains a country at the centre of a worldwide furore. The summer Olympics in Moscow are threatened by a boycott in protest against the influx of Soviet troops into Afghanistan. The United States leads the protests, and another Cold War looms in East-West relations. The world's Islamic countries have met in special session and condemned the Soviet action. Meanwhile, early reports of widespread clashes between Soviet troops and Afghan Moslem rebels have been discounted, with the Soviet forces maintaining a low profile. But they remain in large numbers, and they are not expected to leave in the near future.
