Walter E. Klein from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) spoke to SoMAS at the Southampton Lecture Series on Thursday, February 4th on the topic “NASA's Airborne Lab: Mapping Polar Ice.”
This lecture was organized by the Hamptons Observatory Inc. NASA navigator Walter E. Klein, discussed his work with the DC-8 Airborne Laboratory, its mission to study the Earth's surface and atmosphere. He talked about SOFIA, NASA's 2.7 meter telescope that flies into the stratosphere on a modified 747SP aircraft. NASA's DC-8 Airborne Laboratory serves the world's scientific community by collecting data for scientific research pertaining to studies of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. Data gathered have been used for scientific studies in archeology, ecology, geography, hydrology, meteorology, oceanography, volcanology, atmospheric chemistry, soil science, and biology.
