Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared that racism and intolerance have no chance in modern Ukraine – despite increasing reports of far-right violence.
‘Unfortunately, fans of the ideas of Nazism, xenophobia, and inequality exist in the modern world, in different countries, in different manifestations,’ Zelensky declared during a speech at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday. ‘What is their role and influence in modern Ukraine? Less than zero. Does the ideology of racism and intolerance have chances in modern Ukraine? Less than no chance,’ he said.
However, the reality on the ground in Ukraine appears to be far different, with the country’s far-right regularly staging torchlight marches in honor of World War II-era Nazi collaborators and holding anti-LGBT demonstrations to disrupt pride parades.
